Skills Bootcamp delivers Project Management Success

Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership’s Project Management Skills Bootcamp has delivered some real successes for local businesses in recent weeks. Through collaboration with training partners as part of a Government funded programme, Skills Bootcamps aim to ensure employers have access to the skilled workforce they need, and that more people are trained for the skills gaps that exist now, and in the future.

Businesses in Cumbria can gain new funded qualifications for their staff, designed to help them to gain in-demand skills and take on new responsibilities in the workplace. Skills Bootcamps offer flexible training of up to 16 weeks, giving adults aged 19+ the opportunity to upskill or retrain in sector-specific skills including digital training, construction, project management, logistics and green skills giving businesses the chance to retrain or upskill staff.

Some of the high quality and in-demand new provision currently available is via a Project Management Skills Bootcamp from the University of Cumbria.

David Mackay, People & Development Manager at Carlisle Brass has supported 2 members of staff through a Project Management Skills Bootcamp with the University of Cumbria. David said:

“We have invested time and budget in various project management training over the years, whether via Prince2 or less formal methods and while all have been fantastic, the Project Skills Bootcamp has been of great value to our team members that have attended and our business with the added skills they have gained while on the programme.

The quality of tuition, the models/tools/templates/processes and the shared experience between delegates really made this a very useful part of our team development and subsequently aid successful delivery of our projects in Carlisle Brass. We will certainly be keen to sign up future delegates for the quality, but also has be said that the value for money is outstanding.”

Steve Wood, Employer Engagement Manager at the Institute of Business, Industry & Leadership for the University of Cumbria said:

“Skills Bootcamps are a flexible way for employers to develop their staff to meet the skills needs of their organisation. The Skills Bootcamp in Project Management introduces concepts of Project Lifecycles, Governance, Planning, Budgeting as well as leading and delivering projects. Learners on the programme study a range of project management process, tools and techniques. They also get an insight in conceiving, planning and implement project in a real world work environment and actually apply their new skills. With learners from multiple sectors and types of organisations is a great way see how projects are run differently in diverse environments.

It's great that Carlisle Brass are seeing the benefit of the Project Management Bootcamp and importantly, this is an excellent example of partnership between the University and the LEP supporting Cumbrian employers to meet their need.

This could be the start for many aspiring project managers to consider further study with the University’s Project Academy, find out more at https://www.cumbria.ac.uk/business/project-academy/.”

Naomi Morgan, Skills Bootcamp Programme Manager said:

“Working with the University of Cumbria to provide a Project Management Skills Bootcamp has offered highly valuable provision for local businesses with a hugely respected organisation.

Our team are proud to continue to be a part of the Skills Bootcamps Programme for Cumbria, offering a further 300 funded training opportunities across Westmorland & Furness and Cumberland over the next year. We are seeing fantastic feedback for the Project Management provision from learners themselves but also employers who benefit from the new skills and cost savings in training staff.”

Skills Bootcamps will be co-funded by the employer, where the employer is training their own existing employees. If the employer is a large business (over 250 employees) they will contribute 30% of costs with SMEs (less than 250 employees) contributing 10%. There will not be any charges to the individual participants and as such, self employed learners are completely funded.
