Putting the right infrastructure in place to accelerate growth

Improvements to Cumbria’s road, rail, air and sea port links, together with better communications connectivity, employment site developments, additional business space and new housing are all essential to support enterprise and stimulate the local economy.

In consultation with local authorities, organisations responsible for managing and maintaining the county’s infrastructure, large and smaller businesses, Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership has produced an infrastructure plan to improve transport and communications networks and help accelerate economic growth. Infrastructure improvements focus primarily on exploiting the strategic connectivity of the M6 corridor and the West coast mainline.

The West of M6 Strategic Connectivity Study, published by Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership and Highways England after wide consultation, has also identified 38 priority road improvement schemes for the county to fulfil its economic potential. The study provides the evidence base to support bids for funding for road improvements from government, and highlight to large employers the advantages of making financial contributions to the cost of improving local roads.

Our Logistics sector panel aim to gain maximum benefit from our strategic position to put Cumbria “on the map” at the heart of the UK as a center of logistics capability to attract investment and enable growth of new opportunities, taking a strategic view of our assets;

  • N, S, E & W connectivity, road, rail, airport, port assets
  • Cumbria’s 47m annual visitors
  • Carlisle’s position as the city of the Borderlands
  • Cumbria’s future potential investments in clean energy, net zero carbon, maritime and infrastructure projects.

  • Growing a modernised, productive, sustainable logistics sector

  • Identifying new business opportunities from improved connectivity, cohesion and support

  • Developing the future workforce by encouraging careers in logistics

By working collaboratively and in partnership across the sector, and with the organisations driving new infrastructure and connectivity developments, the sector will aim to create opportunities from the strategic alignment of road, rail, airport, sea port and connectivity with enterprise clusters.

Future development projects within the clean energy, maritime, visitor and manufacturing sectors will be supported and aided in their success by logistics businesses to bring collective benefits to the county.

Proposed improvements to Cumbria’s infrastructure include a package of measures to enhance the Cumbrian coastal railway, its line capacity, reliability and resilience, with increased passenger and freight services, improvements to our road capacity in key locations, the Garden Village developments to the south of Carlisle, housing developments across the county, and improvements within the City Centre of Carlisle.
