Helping local people with targeted support to find work

Inspira, Cumbria’s leading careers management and personal development organisation, has been announced as the organisation chosen to deliver the Skills Support for the Unemployed programme, awarded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA), on behalf of Cumbria LEP.

£2 million Business Basics Fund

A second competition has now launched by BEIS under the Business Basics fund, with a further £2 million of funding to test innovative ways of encouraging SMEs to adopt productivity-boosting technologies and management practices.

Investment in flood resilience measures for Cumbrian manufacturing firm

An established Cumbrian manufacturing firm is benefiting from a £2.6m investment from Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership to protect its premises from flooding. James Walker & Co, one of the county’s largest employers over the last 50 years, is using the investment to safeguard its site and secure the jobs of its existing workforce of over 400 employees.

Cumbria LEP launches new Careers Hub for the county

Cumbria LEP has launched a new Careers Hub for the county, one of only 20 to be piloted in England, which will help transform careers education for young people. The Cumbria Careers Hub is a group of 40 local schools and colleges working together with universities, training providers, employers and career professionals to improve careers education in the county. Its objective is to better prepare our young people for the world of work.

College principal joins board of Cumbria LEP

Cumbria LEP has appointed Principal and Chief Executive of Furness College Andrew Wren to join its Board. Mr Wren joined Furness College as Principal and Chief Executive in September 2015. During his first year, he led the successful merger of Furness College and Barrow Sixth Form College, securing the breadth of post-16 education in Furness.

Still time to contribute to Cumbria’s new Local Industrial Strategy

The LEP is looking to recruit excellent female business leaders from Cumbria’s business community to strengthen representation on its Board. Local SMEs to be offered fully-funded support and grants to accelerate business growth

A new £20 million initiative, designed to embed advanced digital technology across the North West’s manufacturing sector to boost productivity, has been officially launched. Cumbrian companies which get involved in the project will get the chance to access fully-funded support and advice regarding how industrial digital technologies (IDT), including robotics, artificial intelligence, 3D printing and the Internet of Things (IoT), could revolutionise their manufacturing processes.

Cumbria LEP appoints Careers Hub manager

Cumbria LEP has appointed Caroline Ledward to take forward the development of the county’s Careers Hub and help transform careers education for young people. The Cumbria Careers Hub project, one of only 20 to be piloted in England, is designed to improve the quality of careers education and guidance and give young people more and better access to effective work experiences by connecting schools and colleges with employers and careers programme providers.

Cumbria LEP welcomes Highways England consultation for expansion of A595

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling is announcing the launch of a Highways England public consultation to cut congestion and improve safety for drivers on the A595.
As part of the Department for Transport’s commitment to investment in the North with spending over £13bn through to 2020, Cumbria’s crucial road links are set to benefit from major investment, delivering safer, faster, and more reliable journeys.

Cumbria Constabulary to host events to help businesses protect employees from domestic abuse

– 24 October 2018

Cumbria Constabulary is hosting three events to support employers in assessing and managing the risk of domestic abuse faced by employees. Employers have a responsibility for the safety of employees and have protocols in place to assist with personnel issues and care for the wellbeing of staff, but very few address issues such as domestic abuse. In 2011 one third of domestic violence homicides happened on workplace grounds.

Cumbria LEP announces second stage consultation on new Local Industrial Strategy

– 18 October 2018

Cumbria LEP is to hold its second round of consultation on the county’s new Local Industrial Strategy. The strategy will outline how the LEP will work in partnership to deliver economic growth, prosperity and productivity improvements in Cumbria. An outline draft is now being prepared for a further round of consultation at the end of October.

New funding rounds open to develop R&D, carbon reduction and resource efficiency projects

– 15 October 2018

Three new rounds of funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) have opened to help Cumbrian businesses take forward Research & Development (R&D), carbon reduction and resource efficiency projects. £8.7m in total is being made available to help support the county’s continuing drive to develop stronger R&D capabilities and move towards a more energy efficient, low carbon economy. The latest ERDF funding calls are open until 23 November 2018.

Cumbria LEP appoints three new private sector board members

Cumbria LEP has appointed Graham Booth, Dr Steve Curl and Mike Smith OBE to join its team as new private sector board members, taking the board structure to 16 in all and increasing private sector membership to ten.

Cumbria Tourism Business Health Check Survey

Cumbria Tourism is asking tourism related businesses to complete its Business Performance Survey. The survey is undertaken twice a year and it gives Cumbria Tourism a really valuable snapshot of the state of the sector.
