Cumbria Careers Hub is expanding in time for the new academic year to include all eligible secondary schools, special schools and colleges in the County.

Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) hosts and part funds the Careers Hub, through a contractual arrangement with the Careers and Enterprise Company.

The Careers Hub currently has 40 local schools and colleges working together with universities, training providers, employers and career professionals to improve careers education.

Since its launch in January 2019, it has helped drive strong progress against every Gatsby benchmark, which describe high quality careers guidance.

The Hub now wants to employ additional Enterprise Coordinators, who will sit at the heart of the Hub to help schools and colleges improve their careers and enterprise activities and to engage with the world of work. The Enterprise Coordinators will make it easier for employers and the self-employed to engage with schools and colleges.

Careers Hub Manager, Cath Dutton said: “This is brilliant news for the young people of Cumbria, especially those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) who haven’t had access to this support previously.

“SEND and Pupil Referral Units (PRU) have been a part of a Community of Practice sharing ideas and best practice, but this now means they will have the dedicated support of an Enterprise Coordinator and Enterprise Advisor who will work with them to develop their careers programme.”

Careers provision within secondary schools and colleges in Cumbria is now rated amongst the best in England.

The county’s success demonstrates the commitment of employers in Cumbria to support high quality careers education as well as the effectiveness of partnerships within the Hub between employers, schools and colleges and the commitment of Careers Leaders within schools.

To make the most of this opportunity, the Hub is now looking to recruit in two areas:

  • Enterprise Coordinators to work with SEND and PRU schools;
  • Businesses who would like to volunteer their services to help young people with special/additional needs find their next best step.
