Export Champion: Kendal Nutricare

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the stories of some of Cumbria’s Export Champions to inspire and showcase the benefits of expanding your business overseas to drive growth. In this series, we’ll look at some of the key considerations for any business looking to expand to trade internationally, and explain how the Department of International Trade (DIT) can support you and your business at every stage of the export process.

This blog is on Kendal Nurticare, who specialise in the manufacture of world-class nutrition products from early life nutrition to adult and senior formulations.

Kendamil baby milk is produced by Kendal Nutricare and is the only baby formula made in Britain, using a full-cream recipe with no palm oils or fish oils (veggie-friendly) and uniquely containing HMOs (3’-GL), as found in breastmilk.

The whole milk used to make Kendamil is sourced in Cumbria, offering natural local goodness.

The McMahon family behind Kendamil believe wholeheartedly in creating a product range which is good for little ones and their planet. That’s why they they operate their factory on 100% renewable electricity and source their ingredients locally which reduces their carbon footprint.

Kendamil is incredibly proud of its Royal endorsements and was honoured when HRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge selected Kendamil to wean Prince Louis and to be awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise 2020 for International Trade.

International trade accounts for 85% of Kendal Nutricare’s successful £23million business and their team has worked closely with the DIT over the last five years to expand into new territories, driving sales. They have an International Trade Advisor from the DIT who has introduced them to embassies across the world, supported them at trade shows in China and Dubai and ensures that they are aware of all the services available to them from DIT which ranges from accessing new markets globally to market data and grant funding. One notable metric for their success in exporting is that Kendamil sells in 35 territories across South East Asia, Africa, Middle East and Central Europe.

Kendal Nutricare would recommend that any business wishing to sell their products overseas should contact DIT to learn more about the journey to exporting.
