Businesses urged to give a helping hand to Cumbria's young people

Would you like to support young people with a virtual work experience opportunity?

Speakers for Schools, founded in 2010 by ITV's Political Editor Robert Peston, is calling for Cumbrian employers to get involved with its virtual work experience event and discover more about offering young people in Cumbria the chance to get involved in the world of work in our digital society.

Cumbrian employers have a great history of inspiring young people by getting involved with meaningful experiences within the world of work.

Speakers for Schools works with these employers to continue to improve and advance this support to reflect the difficulties we are currently facing, largely as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At Speakers for Schools, the innovative, virtual approach will customise live employer-led opportunities for young people in schools and colleges through:

  • Virtual Insight Days – shorter interactive sessions providing an overview of a sector, an employer, meeting people in different job roles, learning about their career journeys plus workshops in CV building and interview technique.
  • Virtual Placements – longer 3-5 day project and team-based activities, which often include presentations by students as well as workshops on CV building and interview techniques

Craig Ivison, Head of Skills at Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “With two thirds of businesses in Cumbria planning to offer work experience opportunities in the next 12 months, Cumbria Careers Hub is working with partners to develop innovative ways in which our young people can access opportunities for engagement with employers and gain experience of the workplace, providing employers with ways in which their knowledge, skills and experience can be shared with young people. This will enable employers to develop their future workforce and ensure young people develop the knowledge and skills required to build rewarding careers.”

Interested employers will be able to join the 45 minute sessions on either:

  • Tuesday 2nd March at 4:30pm;
  • Thursday 4th March at 12:30pm;
  • Tuesday 9th March at 8:30am.

Alongside experts from Speakers for Schools, participants will be able to find out more about the programme and how employers can help. You will be sent a zoom link the day before the event.

Together, we can deliver a difference for young people. Together we can rewrite the story.
