Brathay Trust joins ranks of Cumbria's Cornerstone Employers

Youth charity Brathay Trust is the latest organisation to join the ranks of Cumbria’s Cornerstone Employers, a role focused on giving strategic careers support to clusters of secondary schools and colleges in the county.

Cornerstone Employers work with their networks, the wider business community and their local team to make sure that young people have access to the career opportunities they need, empowering careers provision in the county.

There are currently over 200 Cornerstone Employers across the country, made up of SMEs, large employers, government, private and not for profits and are from a range of different sectors.

Brathay Trust, based at Brathay Hall and estate just outside Ambleside, has partnered with Cumbria LEP’s Careers Hub and The Careers & Enterprise Company, to offer time and resources in working to inspire young people across the county.

It does so by ensuring that young people have access to meaningful engagements with employers and gain the vital work experience they need to help them make informed choices about their futures. It joins a strong contingent of Cornerstone Employers working in Cumbria, including BAE Systems, Oxley Group, Lake Land Arts and Hargreaves Enterprises.

Trust Chief Executive Godfrey Owen said: “As a charity that develops young people and families, we are committed to supporting schools in creating an environment where all students focus on a career that they will be inspired by, and make a positive contribution to their community.

“Becoming a Cornerstone Employer allows us to work in partnership with other like-minded organisations to create a better future for young people.”

Founded in 1946, Brathay Trust is a charity that operates as a social enterprise. Its mission is to improve the life chances of children, young people and families. It delivers programmes from hubs in Bradford, Yorkshire, and Barrow, as well as three residential outdoor learning centres in The Lake District.

Cath Dutton, Careers Hub Manager at CLEP, said: “We want young people to make the most of opportunities in the communities that they work in and Cornerstone Employers are ambassadors for making this become a reality.

“It is important that we work with our Employers to deliver a high quality careers education to all of our young people in Cumbria and we are delighted that Brathay Trust has joined us on this mission.

“We look forward to working with them to make sure that our young people have equal opportunities, so that they can be best that they can be.”

The Cornerstone Employer scheme underlines a continuing commitment by Cumbria LEP to help young people in the county prepare for the world of work.

The Cumbria Careers Hub, a partner project between Cumbria LEP and The Careers & Enterprise Company, launched in January 2019 and now supports 40 secondary schools across Cumbria to deliver exceptional careers education.

The Cumbria Careers Hub programme offers a range of opportunities for local businesses and organisations to engage and benefit from partnership with local schools and colleges.
